Community Dance Program Encourages Healthy Living Through Social Activity
Formed in 2008, The Hadley Park Line Dancing class sought to provide a fun activity for senior citizens to increase their socialization and interaction with others. However, what started as a mere dancing class for senior citizens has progressed into a powerful community-based program.
In 2014, Sharon Jarrett, a former athlete and two-time cancer survivor, saw a need for not only socialization but to encourage the class participants to become physically active, particularly people over the age of 50. Her vision was to utilize dance as a platform to encourage senior citizens and others to engage in movement toward healthier lifestyles.
As the program progressed, Sharon, whom only taught the class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, created an additional class for adults of all ages on Mondays and Wednesday nights, a few years later. Since then two additional lead instructors, Robert Burton and James Boyd, have joined the team as instructors for the Tuesday and Thursday classes, as well as a few substitute .instructors.
In 2016, Sharon, Robert, and James recognized the opportunity for growth and formed a dance troupe, naming it "The Hadley Park Line Dancers," also known as "HPLD," after the community center that has provided them a safe and comfortable space for classes and practices. Hadley Park Line Dancers is a not-for-profit entity in Nashville and surrounding areas. The line dancers are a diverse group of individuals who perform together and volunteer their time and talents to entertain and educate through the art form of line dancing.
Our mission is to use dance as a platform for encouraging people, particularly senior citizens, to engage in movement toward better health and wellness, developing new friendships through socialization, enjoying diverse genres of music, and learning various dance skills.
Although, HPLD's focus is on dance, our driving force is community.
